Experiencing issues with Notion freezing when trying to type can be incredibly frustrating and disrupt your workflow.

In this article I’ll delve into the common causes behind this problem, providing you with solutions to get you typing smoothly again.

Let’s begin!

Notion Not Letting Me Type

1. Use a Web App

If you're finding it difficult to type in Notion, you should try switching from the desktop app to the web app.

The web app can be accessed from any device with internet.

It’s usually less prone to bugs that affect typing and input on the desktop app. There is no need to download or install anything; just go to www.notion.so and log in.

It ensures a consistent experience across all your devices. The web app gets updated more frequently, so you benefit from the latest features and bug fixes.

2. Browser Issues

If you're having trouble typing in Notion, browser issues may be to blame. To fix this, clear your cache and cookies to load the latest page version.

Ensure you're using a supported browser like Chrome, Safari, or Edge, and keep it updated.

You should disable any extensions to check if they're causing the issue, and try using Notion in incognito mode to bypass potential problems.

Lastly, make sure your internet connection is stable for Notion to work seamlessly.

3. Keyboard Shortcuts Conflicts

Using Notion's keyboard shortcuts can sometimes cause conflicts, making it hard to type normally, as they might overlap with shortcuts from other apps or your operating system.

To fix this, you should first identify the problematic shortcuts by temporarily disabling or resetting them to default.

If you find specific shortcuts causing trouble, modify or disable them through your system preferences, whether on Mac or Windows.

Moreover, Notion offers alternative shortcuts for many actions, so you can find combinations that work better without interfering with your typing.

4. Outdated App Version

If you're still having trouble typing in Notion, it might be because you're using an old version of the app.

It's important to keep Notion updated since updates fix bugs and glitches that could be causing your problem.

Updating ensures you get the latest features and fixes, which can solve many common issues.

For macOS

1. Open the Notion app.

2. On the menu bar, click "View" and then "Reload" to refresh and install updates.

3. If this doesn't work, you might need to uninstall and reinstall the app. Go to the Applications folder, right-click on Notion, and select "Move to Bin." Then, download the latest version from the Notion website and reinstall it.

For iOS:

1. Open the App Store.

2. Tap on your profile icon at the top right corner.

3. Find Notion in the list of apps and tap "Update" if an update is available【25†source】.

For Android:

1. Open the Play Store.

2. Tap your profile icon and select "Manage apps and device."

3. Find Notion in the list of apps under the "Updates available" section and tap "Update"

5. Disable Spellcheck

You can, on the other hand, fix the problem by turning off spell check. To do this, highlight the misspelled word by clicking and dragging over it, then right-click to open a menu.

You should select "Disable spell check" from the menu to turn off spell checking for that word or block of text.

This won't turn off spell check everywhere in Notion, just for the selected parts. This simple trick can make typing in Notion easier if spell check is causing issues.

6. Right-to-Left Text Issues

The notion doesn't natively support RTL languages such as Arabic or Hebrew, which can cause text alignment issues and make it hard to read and write.

To tackle this, you can use the Notion Enhancer tool for better RTL support, although it may still have some problems, especially in comments or new text blocks.

Custom scripts or browser extensions like the "Notion RTL" Chrome extension can also help render RTL text properly.

If issues persist, try refreshing the page, clearing the browser cache, or switching to Notion's web version.

7. Try External Keyboard

Sometimes using an external keyboard can help. It can bypass hardware issues with your device's keyboard, ensuring certain keys work properly.

You should ensure your external keyboard is connected correctly, whether it's wired or wireless, and check the batteries if it's wireless.

External keyboards usually have fewer compatibility problems and are more reliable with apps like Notion.
